5.1 EARTHQUAKE HITS SOUTERN CALIFORNIA
LA TIMES: Authorities were tallying damage from a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck Southern California on Friday night.
Fullerton police said early Saturday that up to 50 people had been displaced because of home damage.
The quake, centered near La Habra, caused furniture to tumble, pictures to fall off walls and glass to break. Merchandise fell off store shelves, and there were reports of plate glass windows shattered.
In Brea, several people suffered minor injuries during a rock slide that overturned their car. Fullerton reported seven water main breaks. CHANCE OF A BIGGER QUAKE
CBS LOS ANGELES: A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck La Habra Friday night more than an hour after a smaller quake shook the area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The temblor, which had a depth of 4.6 miles, hit at 9:09 p.m.
The epicenter was 1 mile east of La Habra, 1 mile west-northwest of Brea, 3 miles south-southwest of Rowland Heights and 4 miles north of Fullerton.
Initially reported to be a magnitude-5.3, the quake was felt in Kern, San Bernardino, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Diego and Los Angeles counties. U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Robert Graves said, “ there is always the small possibility that the 4.4 earthquake was only a prelude to an equal or stronger shake”. He also said that there is, “Always the possibility that it’s a foreshock,” Graves said, adding that about 5% of earthquakes are followed by an equal or larger shake and that if it does happen, it would occur within the next several hours.
