When I first wrote about this virus my biggest fear was that it would break through all containment barriers and spiral out of control. Over a month ago it was reported that Ebola Virus was out of control. The Ebola outbreak has spread to four West African countries, leaving more than 670 dead. A man traveling to Lagos, Nigeria collapsed at the airport after returning from his sister funeral that died of The Virus. He has since died from the deadly infection. There is now a mad scramble to find the passengers that were on the same plane with him as the biggest city in Africa is on a Red Alert. According to Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu, “All ports of entry into Nigeria including airports, seaports and land boarders are placed on red alert,” he said. “Ministry of Health specialists have been positioned in all entry points. Active surveillance has also been stepped up.” Authorities are currently investigating all persons who may have come into contact with the deceased, said Chukwu. More than 1,000 people have been infected by the virus, which can go unnoticed for three weeks and kills 90 per cent of victims.

In an alarming development, the most feared virus has infected two Americans who are helping to stop the spread of the virus in Liberia. American doctor Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, an American working for a charity organization in Liberia has tested positive for the virus. The case has raised fears that the virus could spread beyond the West African countries. There is fear that it could become a worldwide pandemic.

According to Doctors Without Borders, “Last week, we arrived at one village where we had 40 patients in just that village alone. It’s unbelievable.” The number of Ebola victims continues to increase in West Africa. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) continues to treat and try to prevent new cases from occurring, but staff are overwhelmed.” As every second slips away, the virus infects another victim and those trying to stop its spread are in a race against time. Is the virus about to break through all containment barriers and become a global Pandemic? The contagion that is happening in West Africa has spiraled out of control and we could be seeing something much larger that is about to take place with The Ebola Virus.

Although they say it is unlikely it will spread, look at the guy who flew to a differant country and spread it there. I am concerned with our pourous southern border where almost anyone can get into this country. Even if it’s unlikely it will spread here, it’s not impossible.
