DEFESEONE.COM: U.S. Strategic Command this week is conducting a massive nuclear arms drill designed to “deter and detect strategic attacks” on the United States and allies.

A Sunday press release announcing the May 12-16  “Global Lightning” exercise explicitly noted that the event’s timing is “unrelated to real-world events.” Observers of ongoing East-West tensions will note, however, that Russia on Thursday conducted its own large-scale nuclear response drill under the supervision of President Vladimir Putin. That exercise was widely promoted in Russian media and included the test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile and submarine-fired ballistic missiles.

“Exercise Global Lightning 14 has been planned for more than a year and is based on a notional scenario READ MORE: http://www.defenseone.com/threats/2014/05/us-conducts-nuclear-response-exercises/84256/

BARENTSOBSERVER.COM: Russia’s Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters has issued travel restrictions to all employees like the country’s firefighters, ambulance drivers and rescue troopers, reports LifeNews.

A similar travel ban is imposed for parts of employees under the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) including tens of thousands of police officers, prison guards, and other law enforcement agencies like the Federal Drug Control and the Federal Migration Service. Others listed are people with access to state secrets, like certain employees of the Foreign Ministry. According to estimates, they are around 250,000 people.

The two reasons given to explain the travel ban are to take measure to prevent leaks of secrets and secondly, to prevent the possibility of being arrested by U.S. law enforcement agencies READ MORE: http://barentsobserver.com/en/security/2014/05/russia-bans-police-emergency-and-military-employees-traveling-abroad-13-05#.U3H-GAvKhWh.twitter

GULFDAILYNEWS.COM: Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Crimea and threat to Ukraine are causing damage he perhaps did not anticipate: disorientation of the US and profound division in Europe, especially in Germany, and in Nato. A real risk of war.

American Secretary of State John Kerry has given an interview to The Wall Street Journal stating that the American government and administration are “fully aware” that this confrontation with Russia could lead to nuclear war. He made an angry attack on the Russian television international service, Russia Today, for declaring that he had threatened Nato war if Russia laid a finger “on a single inch” of Nato

territory. President Obama himself has used harsh words about his Russian opponents, but not comparable to this.

At the same time there is near-silence from the Pentagon and from Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel and senior commanders, including General Martin Dempsey, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This might be interpreted as prudence on the part of the military men who would bear the price of a war that civilian officials brandish as if only words were the weapons.

An echo to Mr Kerry’s belligerence has come from Nato, where the Deputy Secretary General, Alexander Vershbow, a former US ambassador to Russia, accused President Putin of compelling Nato to treat the Russians as “enemies READ MORE: http://www.gulf-daily-news.com/NewsDetails.aspx?storyid=376810
